Thwip!’s Manga Mondays – Assassination Classroom

It’s Monday folks! Which means we talk about a favorite manga of ours and why you all should read it – this week’s Manga Monday is all about Yusei Matsui’s Assassination Classroom

Very rarely does a manga actually end as promised, but Yusei Matsui said that this manga series was going to take place over a school year, and it does! Concluded in a very well-paced 180 chapters (21 volumes), Assassination Classroom was a great read from one of the most recently published mangas.

I am a sucker for stories in the classroom, but I was pretty blown away with how good this series came together.

The premise is decidedly unsimple – an unkillable alien who managed to destroy 70% of the moon has decided it wants to be a teacher…and that in one year it will destroy the Earth. When our very weird looking alien (affectionately named Korosensei) joins Kunugigaoka Junior High School and teaches the delinquent class of 3-E, things become awesome.

The classes he teaches are bizarre, thanks to a combination of his superpowers, his teaching methodology, and how oddly caring the bastard is. His kids are the worst of the worst…namely they are the weakest students, physically and educatedly (I know that’s not a word, but they kids aren’t stupid, they just been relegated to this classroom for various reasons).

Essentially this would be best described as Great Teacher Onizuka with (even more) superpowers and bizarreness (but barely).

The end is touching and is whole-heartedly earned by the class (though Earth doesn’t deserve it) and made the entire read worth the journey.

Trust me, you will love reading this, Thwip on!
