Thwip! Watch is all about what goes on our screens, namely TV. Whether CW or Fox or NBC or what-have-you, you can be sure that we here at Thwip! have been watching it. Today we are going to talk about Powerless.
This…was a difficult show to watch.
But not for obvious reasons.
The thing is, this was a very obvious uneven episode, probably the victim of the rumored re-shoots. The episode lampshades, whiplashes, no-sells, and even just outright destroys the fourth wall…and then goes back into a deep, dark territory of mediocrity. Every time there is a joke that makes you chuckle, it is predicated by a very obvious “WAH-WAH” joke (basically, if anyone watched last night’s The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon says that all jokes need to have some kind of sound effect so that people know it is a joke – that’s how many jokes felt on Powerless).
Everyone plays their role well, but they are obviously not interested in it yet, or at least whoever is doing the directing has been strongly hinting that this might not even get a full season order so they better not unpack so they are kind of going through the motions, which is kind of sad – ’cause the episode really needs a lot of verve and energy that felt lacking.
Despite all of that, I was oddly, genuinely amused. It could be because I kind of love all things oddball, but also I feel like having a comedy series about superheroes works just as well. This has a potentially strong premise, but right now it needs to figure out which side to embrace of the superhero-side – are heroes lame and this is just a 9 to 5 job or are heroes awesome and we should embrace the weirdness of the super-powered world.
I will give this a couple of more episodes, I hope it picks up what it is intending to throw down, ’cause it could be genuinely fun.
