Thwip! Watch – Powerless – S01E03 – Sinking Day

Thwip! Watch is all about what goes on our screens, namely TV. Whether CW or Fox or NBC or what-have-you, you can be sure that we here at Thwip! have been watching it. Today we are going to talk about Powerless.

That cold open actually made me chuckle and reminded me a bit of another comedy series, Community (okay, Danny Pudi might be giving me some slight flashbacks to that show).

You know what, I am genuinely enjoying the show. It is goofy, doesn’t take itself seriously at all and that is its main selling point. The characters are parodies of dysfunctional people in a dysfunctional world and everyone knows parodies of parodies always work (okay that might not be true, but it seems to work in this circumstance).

The jokes come fast and almost non-stop, so even if there is a dud or two, it is immediately followed up with another one and that kind of glosses over the misfires.

Sure there are rough spots (Alan Tudyk does a great job, but after a while his character is beyond irritating) but somehow it lands on its feet, like an impossible avalanche of doom and hilarity.

I kind of wish they got Jason Mamoa to make an appearance, but even if they didn’t the replacement Atlanteans (who are definitely not Atlantans) were pretty funny in the Swedish joke kind of way and I kind of appreciated, ’cause it all somehow worked!

I am really hopeful about this series which is not taking itself too seriously, instead just trying to see how absurd they can go before they sink into a huge pile of garbage (’cause unless they get an actual storyline into this series, it kind of will be running along on gags and gaffs, which very few comedy series can really do).
