It’s Monday folks! Which means we talk about a favorite manga of ours and why you all should read it – this week’s Manga Monday is all about Nobuyuki Anzai’s Flame of Recca.
Before there was Naruto…there was Flame of Recca!
Bringing ninjas and the Hokage, dragons and a princess, and even time-traveling, Nobuyuki Anzai’s Flame of Recca is a wild-ride.
Anzai sensei’s first major work, this manga is great on multiple reasons. First of all, this is just a solid shounen manga, having all the classic beats of tournaments, lost brothers, and an even bigger bad at the end of it all.
But yet, none of it feels tired.
That’s ’cause the characters that Anzai puts together are compelling, being kids and pretty weirdly badass (especially Recca, damn does he level up at by the end of the series). The powers are basic but used so uniquely and interestingly that you just find yourself turning page after page just to see what happens next. Even the heel-turns are fantastically compelling.
How compelling is everything? The last two volumes make me cry, every time. I just cannot help it as things come to a head and your heart just swells as all things come to an end.
Anzai’s art progresses through the series (kind of reminds me of the evolution of Nobuhiro Watsuki in Rurouni Kenshin) and it is kind of nice to see him settle into his final style, quite beautiful.
This manga has heart, has rip-roaring revenge, has a great flashback, basically it has it all and it is why I whole-heartedly recommend it.
