I am really not liking these Superman Reborn covers.
(Also, it’s really terrible that in the “DC Universe Rebirth”, the event is called “Superman Reborn”…at least Batman isn’t going through a “Regenesis” or I would have to chuck everything out the window).
Anyways. Kind of a light issue, but has heavy ramifications.
I would just like to give a shout out to the art team of Doug Mahnke, Jaime Mendoza, and Wil Quintana who bring us some of the most beautifully colorful splash pages this week. Fan-damn-tastic work as “Clark” puts the pressure on Superman.
(as for the backup story, Ian Churchill is equally admirable, but he doesn’t get the opportunity to put up the Loony Tune splash pages of Superman [but he does a great Animated Series version of Big Blue], so he is second best for this round [but an overall great artist, especially with the story he tells with Paul Dini].)
Story-wise, I have to admit Paul Dini’s was a more compelling one…but that’s because the one that Dan Jurgens puts out really establishes Dini’s one…so overall they are both winners!
So far with Mr. Mxyzptlk being the main antagonist of this little event, it will be interesting to see how this new DC universe puts together things such as this little piece of the Silver Age into the modern continuity.
A pretty decent chapter that had some amazing art for both stories…and a well-crafted little background padding with Dini’s story, this issue gets a solid four and a half Thwips!
