Thwip! Watch is all about what goes on our screens, namely TV. Whether CW or Fox or NBC or what-have-you, you can be sure that we here at Thwip! have been watching it. Today we are going to talk about Marvel’s Iron Fist.
I am going to be honest, I have no goddamn clue as to what happened in this episode.
Seriously, this episode takes such a nose dive in story-telling (the quality is still the same, shit) that an hour passes by and you are still not sure as to what the point any of it was.
But, I am going to break it down for you.
Danny is a fish out of water as he swims into the corporate pool, but since he is the one with the majority stock, it doesn’t really matter (I am pretty sure that corporations don’t work that way, but what do I know? just comic books). Anyways, so they try to make an issue out of Danny being back in the world of the living and all that, but it falls flat – it just feels like another day at the office of some generic corporate TV show.
Then there is Colleen Wing, who they are trying to give a story arc, but so far it isn’t really working as well as they would hope (I will give her story another episode before passing proper judgment). The main thing is that Jessica Henwick can move, she clearly shows that on the Wing-Chun dummy (though even that was still badly staged, it starts off well and then dies out into random flailing). Her second cage match was even worse than the previous episode, just complete and utter horseshit in showcasing fighting skills.
Finally, there is the Danny Rand fight. Again, you can see that Finn Jones has clearly trained in wushu at the very least, but the fight is so badly choreographed and shot (that elevator scene…was it supposed to be reminiscent of the Captain America one? ’cause it was had no soul to it, or style).
I remember reading a review that said the showrunner of the series feels utterly disconnected from the material…and they are right, this guy is like, “oh good, another paycheck” – not even bothering to take any kind of cues from the chop-schlocky material that the Iron Fist is based off of…and doing a piss poor job of his own “vision” to boot.
Also, the dragon tattoo looks like shit…
