Thwip! Watch is all about what goes on our screens, namely TV. Whether CW or Fox or NBC or what-have-you, you can be sure that we here at Thwip! have been watching it. Today we are going to talk about Marvel’s Iron Fist.
So all that hype with the previous two episodes kind of all gets pissed away.
It actually starts off promising, with Ward making a reapparance and chewing the hell out of the scenery.
But then Bokuto comes on the scene. Bokuto is such an annoying dick, not even menacing…he is literally the physical embodiment of all the bullying that Ward did to Danny as a child (in that one scene that seemed to hint at something but ultimately, like many of the story hints dropped, went nowhere). He talks like he is menacing and that he is a threat, but every time he has fought, he has had his ass handed to him – this is the guy they replaced Gao with? She threw Danny across the room with a wave of her hand, she lied, cheated, and just did whatever she wanted to get her own way.
Then there is the dialog, which is still nonsense…I get that it is supposed to be a lighter series, but doesn’t have to be insultingly juvenile.
Most of the episode was playing for time for a big confrontation, which ended up being disappointing (the little kata-hip hop scene was actually charming…if it wasn’t 11 episodes too late and too deep into the episode). All the fighting reminded me of when us here at Thwip were little boys, all hopped up on sugar and enthusiasm, play-fighting scenes that we saw in actual proper kung-fu movies.
Yes, it looks like Marvel essentially paid people to play…admirable, but not for the price they paid…
