Thwip! Watch – Powerless S01E07 – “Emergency Punch-Up”

Thwip! Watch is all about what goes on our screens, namely TV. Whether CW or Fox or NBC or what-have-you, you can be sure that we here at Thwip! have been watching it. Today we are going to talk about Powerless.

A far more enjoyable episode than last week’s. I kind of hope that Powerless does get a second season, ’cause you can kind of see that there is a germ of a good comedy there…but these episodes are not selling it enough.

Anyways, with that downer aside, this was kind of a fun episode.

Instead of having the group couple off and do their own A-B-C plot adventures, we had a bottle episode that had all the characters interact with each other together – and it really works. The cast easily play off of each other and their rapid fire insanity really sells that this is a whole different type of show from the other superpowered stories we are getting at the moment.

Just, there is something not quite right.

Maybe because the series feel s a bit *too* artificial, so everything feels slightly forced (could be the hyper-pop coloring that forces that idea of artificialness – but it is so nice to have color…)

Anywways (again), this series does a lot of things right – it takes in the ridiculousness of a superhero universe and shows how unhinged you have to be to live there. This episode had some great lines for each of the cast members that made you chuckle. And the writing was tight! It never felt that there was an extraneous moment (there actually was one, but it kind of gets glossed over and you forget about it, the best way to deal with that).

Also, it was kind of nice to have Vanessa Hudgens remind us that she is a product of the Disney pop-machine – she has a set of nice pipes!

Like I said, it still is a heavily flawed show, but I enjoy every moment of it.
