Thwip! Watch is all about what goes on our screens, namely TV. Whether CW or Fox or NBC or what-have-you, you can be sure that we here at Thwip! have been watching it. Today we are going to talk about Powerless.
This is the episode we have been waiting for.
It takes all the insanity of the characters (and frankly to live in the superhero universe as a normal civilian, you have to be insane or you wouldn’t survive) and puts them in sitcom situations and then spins it in that whole DC universe schtick.
This episode has it all, three perfectly good subplots that all actually work! Superhero references, bother overt and oblique! All that and character development as well!
Seriously, Powerless is at its best when it embraces the DC universe with both hands and squeezes it for all its worth – so when Emily befriends the Green Fury (who is actually Fire, let’s not kid ourselves…they even throw in a JLE reference, so they know it too), she gets roped into all sorts of Wayne Security shenanigans (which is basically all misogyny).
What I really loved about this episode is that the jokes were actually really good – especially the clever way they ended up inverting everything about the advertisement – and actually felt relevant to the plots that were being played out instead of just being jammed in there to say, “hey, we made a funny DC reference.”
It’s that type of writing that am looking for in this show, and after 7 episodes, this eighth one delivers.
