It’s Monday folks! Which means we talk about a favorite manga of ours and why you all should read it – this week’s Manga Monday is all about Hiromu Arakawa’s FullMetal Alchemist
There is almost no one who is reading manga or watching anime that has not heard of Hiromu Arakawa’s FullMetal Alchemist.
And with good reason.
This is one of the few pitch-perfect mangas – having great art, a great story, and a hugely accessible world.
The world that Arakawa builds is one such that you feel, “yeah, I want to be an alchemist!” and then you start day-dreaming what your Alchemist name would be (and I know I wasn’t the only one to do so)
The story actually starts off full-tilt, but goes from small to all-encompassing in such a natural way, they by the time you realize that you are sucked into a country-destroying plot of epic proportions, you are like, “well I can’t let go now…let’s take this sucker to the end!”
And what an end, so melancholic, but so satisfying.
Arakawa’s art is also quite gorgeous, giving me a bit of Western comic-feel while at the same time being wholly a manga. She is great in both the dramatic and the action sequences of the story, which is why the manga is such a balanced read – if you are there for drama and philosophy, you get it beautifully staged – and if you are there for some hardcore action, you get a full face of that as well, magnificently choreographed.
One of the great mangas of the modern era, definitely one that should be read, even if you have watched the animes.
